About Poéma

Our Story

Poéma began with a simple conviction: health learning should help people feel capable—not confused, intimidated, or alone.

Built from what healthcare leaves unfinished

I created Poéma Health because people deserve health information they can understand, clinicians deserve meaningful ways to share what they know, and lived experience deserves a respectful, clearly identified place in learning.
After more than 30 years in healthcare and a lifetime of teaching, I have repeatedly seen the distance between what people are told and what they need to understand. A brief appointment may provide a diagnosis, instruction, or treatment plan without enough time to explore what it means in daily life.
I have also seen knowledgeable, compassionate clinicians constrained by short encounters and systems that leave too little room for teaching. The internet has made health information abundant, but abundance is not the same as understanding.
Poéma was created to offer another way. Here, trustworthy education, professional expertise, practical guidance, community observation, and lived experience can contribute to learning without being treated as interchangeable.

Why the name Poéma

Poéma comes from the Greek word poiēma, meaning something made—a work or creation. In Ephesians 2:10, the word is used in the phrase often translated as ‘God’s workmanship.’
My own connection to the name is rooted in faith and in the belief that every person has inherent worth, purpose, and the right to be treated with dignity, understanding, and care. That belief does not suggest that every body will be free from illness, disability, uncertainty, or limitation.
Poéma welcomes people of every faith and no faith. The name explains why this work began; it does not define who belongs here.

A place to learn, connect, and grow

Poéma is being built as a community-centered platform where people can learn from verified clinicians, explore clearly identified lived experience, ask questions, exchange perspectives, and take meaningful next steps.
Learning here is reciprocal. Everyone has something to learn and something to teach. Clinicians bring professional knowledge and experience. Members bring questions, observations, practical insight, and perspectives that can deepen understanding.
Participation never requires personal exposure. Members choose how they are seen, what they share, and when they simply listen.
From confusion to understanding.
From isolation to connection.
From knowledge to meaningful action.

Our Mission

Poéma Health brings people and verified clinicians together to make health and healthcare knowledge understandable, human, and useful. We connect trustworthy education, professional expertise, and clearly identified lived experience so people can ask better questions, make informed choices, and take meaningful next steps.

Our Vision

Poéma envisions a world where trustworthy health and healthcare knowledge is within everyone’s reach; people can learn without shame and act with greater confidence and agency; and clinicians have meaningful ways to teach beyond the limits of a brief encounter.
Our Values

What guides Poéma

Dignity and Belonging

Every person who comes to Poéma is treated as capable, worthy of respect, and welcome — regardless of what they already know or don’t.

Clarity and Usefulness

If it isn’t understandable, it isn’t finished. We write and teach so that knowledge can actually be used, not just read.

Credibility and Transparency

The source, strength, and limits of every kind of knowledge on Poéma stay visible, not blurred together.

Agency, Privacy, and Choice

Members decide what they share, how they’re identified, and how they participate — always.

Curiosity and Lifelong Growth

Understanding your health is an ongoing practice, not a single lesson. Poéma is built to support learning over a lifetime.

Connection and Reciprocity

Understanding grows in relationship — through questions asked, experience shared, and people responding to one another with care.

Knowledge That Expands Possibility

The purpose of learning isn’t information for its own sake — it’s what that understanding makes possible for a person’s life.
The Poéma Difference

What makes Poéma different

Most health content online falls into two camps: clinical and cold, or informal and unverified. Poéma was built to be neither.

Our Core Philosophy

Learning should expand what is possible

Understanding your health is not just about having more information. It’s about being able to ask better questions, make sense of what you’re facing, and take a next step with more confidence than before.
Poéma treats education, professional expertise, and lived experience as distinct forms of knowledge — each valuable, each with its own source and limits.
That is what learning is for on Poéma: not credentials for their own sake, but the capacity to understand, to choose, and to act.
What becomes possible for this person because they learned this?
Our Core Philosophy

Knowledge can move at different speeds

Traditional research and evidence development are essential, but they can also be slow, costly, burdensome, and incomplete. Important questions often emerge in practice before formal systems have studied them fully.
Poéma makes room for verified professionals to share expert opinion, professional judgment, recurring observations, and lessons developed through experience.
The goal is not to elevate experience above evidence or evidence above every other way of knowing. It is to identify each contribution honestly.
Transparency makes knowledge more useful; it should not become a barrier that silences responsible professional insight.
